Joan D. Vinge is an American science fiction author. She is known for such works as her Hugo Cat[edit]. Psion (); Catspaw (); Dreamfall (). Cat’s paw is a phrase derived from La Fontaine’s fable, “The Monkey and the Cat” , referring to a person used unwittingly or unwillingly by another to accomplish the other’s own purpose. The second novel, which appeared some years later, justifies the bleakness of this read The events of “Psion” are integrated into “Catspaw” as a rich backstory. I’m glad is wasn’t as, again, that could have been cheesy – a hardened street-kid who’s never known love or comfort shouldn’t be so easily changed and “saved.

That said, not everyone is happy wi Cat is trying to make something of the life he nearly lost in the previous book, and he’s minding his business going to university when he’s kidnapped.

This book makes me feel so many things that trying to put them in words will not even do it justice. He felt alive and real. But when things start to get ugly, Cat jumps into the line of fire as a bodyguard is expected to, and yet again carries the hatred of others on his own back.

I remember buying the second sequel, Dreamfallwhen it was new in hardcover, and I’d have been around 16 then.


This book contains one very s trip through cyberspace. And, something I didn’t realize until after reading it, it is actually the second in a series.

It is most definitely worth a read. So I liked the first book when I read it last week.

I still want to know if Seibling is Cat’s ivnge. It’s a combination that is catspzw to lead to disaster. Dark themes, but they are balanced by a light tone and hints at alternate modes of existence. While Catspaw is a much better story, Psion is the first in the Cat carspaw and, as such, commands respect for bringing beautifully rendered and flawed characters to life – characters that have stayed with me for years, characters that I still think about, characters that I wish had had more room to evolve.

Joan Vinge is a favorite sci-fi author. He never knew he was half Hydran, but this explains a lot about his life. And yet the story remains compelling despite this. Catspaw by Joan D. I originally began reading the Cat series by Joan D. I know there’s one more book to this series written years vings, but I’m hesitant to read it considering how good this book was.

With this here I have the name and author to recommend to others. The “abused teen with psychic abilities” was done many times in the 80s when this was published vvinge few did it as well as Vinge. I read this a LONG time ago but would love to revisit it, I remember it was a huge favorite of mine at the time.

I’ve now finished re-reading Psion and again, I enjoyed the ride. That is the best I can say. I lost what respect I had for Cat taking care of the children when he didn’t protest or seemed at all worried that the kid was there in the first place, regardless of class issue. There is more political intrigue in this novel–plots within plots, and Cat has to learn to n I picked this book up before realizing it was book 2 of a series, stopped midway to read “Psion,” then finished this last night–at 5am.

Read more Read less. And eventually, it all comes together in his plot to expose Elnear’s competition, Sojourner Stryger, as a bigot, by using himself as bait.

The good parts are also the bad, though. This is my favourite book.
